Owabi Forest Reserve and Bird Sanctuary
|
The Owabi Bird Sanctuary is just 15km from Kumasi. It is a Winter home for a variety of migratory birds as well as tropical birds who live there year round.
Formally, Kumasi only source of drinking water was the Owabi River, located to the west of the city. When the river was dammed to create a reservoir, the resulting watershed extended deep into cities nearby forests. The reservoir and forest have since become the natural habitat for many species of the region's wildlife, as well as for a number of migratory birds.
An ideal habitat for winter migratory birds and hundreds of the endangered Mona Monkeys. Even with the obligatory guide, the sanctuary's antelope are difficult to find and even more difficult to observe, due to their extreme shyness. At present, one of the basic pleasures of the sanctuary consists in the opportunity of visiting a fine, well-preserved forest that gives an idea of how the region used to look before intensive logging began. |
