Formerly the Gold Coast, Ghana is a young republic which became independent from Britain on March 6. 1957, the first black African colony to achieve its independence. Ghana occupies the pinnacle spot in Pan-African history having hit the torch for African Emancipation and became home in famous Pan-Africanist such as W.E. B Du Bois and George Pad more. Dr. Kwame Nkrumah whose mausoleum adds to Accra"s landscape was Ghana"s first President. 42 forts and castles including Elmina Castle, Cape Coast Castle, Fort William - Anomabu, Christiansborg Castle, Fort Amsterdam (Cormantin) - Abandze, Fort Good Hope - Senya Beraku, Fort Patience - Apam, Fort St. Jago (Coenraadsburg), Fort Apollonia - Beyin, Fort Batenstein - Butre, Fort Metal Cross - Dixcove, Fort Orange - Sekondi, Fort St. Anthonio - Axim, Fort St. Sebastian - Shama, and Friederichsburg at Princess town are recognised by UNESCO as World I Heritage Monuments. Ghana has many beautiful beaches including Ada - Paradise Beach, Kokrobite Beach, La Pleasure Beach, Cocoloco Beach, Ningo-Prampram Beach, and Korle Beach to name a few. Other historical points of interest: Independence Square, The Du Bois Memorial Center for Pan-Africa Culture, Tetteh quarshie’s Cocoa Farm, Slave Market of Abonse, Okomfo Anokye’s Shrine, Paga Nania Slave Camp, Navrongo Catholic Cathedral, Gwollu Slave-Trader Defence Wall, George Ferguson's Tomb, Komfo Anokye Sword, Larabanga mosque, Nalerigu Defence Wall, and the Wuriyanga Mosque. Of the national parks, Mole National Park is probably the most popular. There are other nature reserves though - Shai Resource Reserve, Boabeng-Fiema Sanctuary, Kintampo Waterfalls, Kyabobo National Park, Tafi Monkey Village, Akatekyi crocodile pond, Kakum National Park, Aburi Botanical Gardens, Boti Falls, Atewa-Atwirebu Butterfly Sanctuary, Fuller Falls, Bui National Park, Gbelle Game Reserve, Ankasa Conservation Area, Wechiau Hippopotamus Sanctuary, Kalapka Resource Reserve, Bobiri Forest Butterfly Sanctuary, Bomfobiri Wildlife Sanctuary, and Owabi Wildlife Sanctuary. Two lakes of interest are The Volta Lake and Akosombo Dam (the largest man made lake in the world) and Lake Bosomtwe.
